Fear not, workers! Palantir has launched “Working Intelligence: The AI Optimism Project,” which is a “quasi-public information and marketing campaign” centered around AI in the workplace. So far it consists of some blog posts and a manifesto. There will also be a podcast.
An analysis by the Chartered Management Institute reveals that one third of UK employers is using some kind of “bossware” technology to track workers’ activity. This figure may be an underestimate, as another third revealed they don’t know what tracking their organizations do.
While President Trump wages a trade war premised on the return of manufacturing work, the US tech sector is backing ventures that aim to replace human workers with robots. Tesla touts humanoid robots as a future growth area, and Jeff Bezos has invested in several advanced robotics firms. Bezos, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and OpenAI’s Sam Altman have all invested in Figure, a humanoid robot company that says its initial rollout will focus on manufacturers and warehouses, among other applications.
Amazon marked the deployment of its millionth robot in its warehouse operations. The company now has almost as many robotic workers as human ones. Robots currently assist with three out of every four Amazon deliveries worldwide and have contributed to the lowest number of average employees Amazon has per warehouse in 16 years. While Amazon has programs for training and upskilling employees, future warehouse job losses are likely.
