Data center energy use is not the only AI-related climate risk: researchers anticipate an increase in AI-driven data breaches that impede the deployment of smart, networked low-carbon technologies, like electric vehicles, smart building systems, and grid-responsive technologies that need to be adopted at scale to mitigate climate change.
Launched in 2022, the Tea app invites women to join and share red flags about men to help other women avoid them. To verify that users are women, Tea requires them to upload a picture of their ID or their face. Despite purporting to have safety measures in place, users’ images, identifying information, and more than a million private conversations - including some about abortions - were compromised in two separate security breaches in late July, leading to online abuse against the women whose information was stolen.
